Canyoneering is a thrilling sport that has been rapidly gaining awareness and momentum, and steadily increasing in popularity over the last few years.
Canyoneering
Also called Canyoning, as well as Abseiling, Canyoneering is a multi-part activity which may include rappelling; boulder-hopping; down-climbing; stemming and other sport-specific techniques; wading or even swimming; and of course, hiking.
Rappelling
Rappelling, which is basically descending via technical systems and ropes, is a major element in the adventure experience; but canyoneering, by definition, is entering into, exploring, and following the incredible natural indentation areas called slot canyons, which have literally been carved dramatically through sandstone by water, wind and time. As slot canyons are prevalent in the desert Southwest, including the popular Zion National Park and Lake Powell areas, canyoneering is steadily becoming a planned for, “must-do” activity for destination tourists and nature enthusiasts.
